What is a podcast

A podcast is a collection of digital media files which is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers. The term, like “radio”, can refer either to the content itself or to the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also termed podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster.

What will I need to listen to a podcast?

You will need an internet connection; and a piece of podcast software or an RSS feed reader (see Related Links).

How you subscribe will vary depending on which software you have chosen. Three pieces of software popular with MyRFS users are iTunes, Juice and Doppler .

You can also subscribe using a web-based “feed reader” such as My Yahoo or Google Reader. These work in a similar way to the podcast software but are online rather than application-based and you need to have an account – they’re usually free and easy to set-up but you will need an email address.

To subscribe the first thing you need to do is add the “feed” of the podcast to your software (or online reader). The feed is where the software will go to each time it wants to check for a new episode.
You will need to copy this feed address and paste it into your podcast software. How you do this will depend on your software, but you should look out for buttons or links that say “Add” or “Subscribe”.

What software do I need to subscribe to a podcast?

You need to install a piece of software which will search the web to find the latest episode and automatically deliver it to your computer.

This software is usually free, and the top three are popular with our users are iTunes, Juice and Doppler .

How do I transfer a podcast to my MP3 player?

Each MP3 player will be different but, basically, you need to plug your player into your computer (usually via a USB cable) so that it appears as an external device. Simply locate the podcasts episodes which you have already downloaded on your computer, and then ‘drag and drop’ them onto your MP3 player. Once the files have transferred, you will be able to disconnect the MP3 player and listen to the podcast episodes on the move.

Fortunately, some MP3 players also come with software to allow you to “sync” the podcasts you have subscribed to on your computer with your player. This means that each time you plug in your MP3 player, the software will automatically transfer the latest episodes of your chosen podcasts to it.  How this works depends on the brand of your MP3 player and the software you are using.
